First volume of Marghinānī's commentary on his Bidāyat al-mubtadiʼ, a treatise on Ḥanafī law, comprising Kitāb al-Ṭahārah to Kitāb al-Waqf.

Title from inscription on fol. 7a.
Physical description: 25 lines per page. Written in thick medium large naskh in black ink with use of red. Soft biscuit paper, hardly translucid, with pulp visible. Fol. 1 and 240 are later additions (European paper). Marginal annotations. Table of contents on fol. 3b-5b. Biographical note on the author, excerpted from Ṭabaqāt al-ʻulamāʼ, and verses of poetry in praise of this book on fol. 1a (later hand). Several short inscriptions and excerpts of various texts on fol. 2a-b. Several inscriptions, including verses of poetry on fol. 7a. Foliation in black ink using Arabic numerals (a few numbers in that foliation wanting). Number of leaves according to modern foliation.
Inscription in Arabic numerals on a label pasted on the upper cover: "188". Inscription in Arabic numerals on a label pasted on the pastedown of the upper cover: "1039".
Origin: According to colophon, completed in --- Ābād by ...? on 12 Dhū al-Qaʻdah 729 [Sept. 7, 1329] (fol. 247b).
Incipit: الحمد لله الذى اعلى معالم العلم واعلامه واظهر شعاير الشرع واحكامه
Explicit: والغنى لا يحتاج الى صرف هذه الغلّة لغناه والله اعلم بالصواب تم النصف
Binding note
Dark brown leather over paper pasteboards for upper and lower covers and flap. Blind tooled and stamped. Rebacked.
